With the studies of Bayburt University, a new type of hyacinth plant was discovered at the passage of Bayburt Kop Mountain, which is one of the important routes connecting the Eastern Anatolia Region and the Black Sea Region.

Dr. Abdurrahman Sefalı, a lecturer from Bayburt University Faculty of Education, noticed this plant which has its own leaf and flower characteristics at the passage of Kop Mountain in the dense stony areas with steep slopes during the field studies conducted in 2018-2019 which ends up with a discovery of new endemic plant belong to hyacinth (Bellevalia) family as a result of the studies togehter  with the Ege University Botanical Garden and Herbarium Application and Research Center member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Yıldırım.

These two scientists working in Bayburt University and Ege University, concluded that this plant is a new kind that has not been mentioned in the literature until now as a result of their joint studies on the subject. Realizing that the plant had not been discovered before and made an important discovery as a result of their studies, the lecturers attributed this new plant to Bayburt city and named it "Bayburt Hyacinth" ("Bellevalia Bayburtensis").

The lecturer from Bayburt University Dr. Abdurrahman Sefalı and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Yıldırım, an academic personel of Ege University, prepared a scientific article as a result of their collaborative studies about this special plant discovered at Bayburt Kop Mountain Bahtlı region where geographically rare and endemic plants are located. With the publication of their article in a scientific journal abroad, this newly discovered plant kind entered the literature with the name "Bayburt Hyacinth".

Referring to the fact that the number of newly discovered hyacinth species is small and the spread area is very narrow, Dr. Sefalı noticed that Bayburt has many special areas and rare plants that are constantly waiting to be discovered. Emphasizing that Bayburt and its surroundings are important places for such scientific studies, Dr. Sefalı stated that the "Bayburt Hyacinth" is an example of these studies.

Being thankful to all academic and administrative colleagues, especially to Bayburt University Rector Prof. Dr. Selçuk Coşkun, for their support, Dr. Sefalı added that they will continue to their work with a greater motivation with the excitement of finding a new species every day in their field work.
